Once, in a mountainous kingdom beyond the setting sun, a boy was born just before the ides of March, under the sign of the full moon. His wasn’t a birth of prophecy, nor a birth that the saints had foreseen. He chose not to define his identity, beyond being pretty nice. No life manifesto was ever offered. No self-definition. No song. No legend. Hemingway was the only one capable of touching our souls with less than ten words and his simply invoked mortality and despair. Like Flaubert said, no words are anything more than a cracked kettle on which we beat out tunes for bears to dance to, while all the time we long for our music to move the stars.

As a young man, like a carriage flowing along a midnight street, he fled before the pink hands of dawn first brushed the sky. Now, hooded and cloaked, he wanders the desert, searching for a forgotten romance of light and song. He didn’t worry about Big Brother watching. He didn’t want to know John Galt. But he knew Odysseus would make it home.

The adventure had just begun.

Notes From Underground

The fact that I'm writing this at 3:30 in the morning, naked, lying on a fishing trawler after finally acquiring a freshly slain weasel for my first meal of the day, ought to spell out to you how chaotic my life has been this week. School has been overwhelming as they prepare us for the end of the semester and the beginning of exams. Also, I have been getting ridiculously little sleep, not only because of school.

One of the most amazing (and ruinous) examples of this that happened early this week was the Leonid meteor shower. Several of my friends and I hiked to the top of Mont Royal at 3 in the morning and lay on a frosty hill watching the sky for 2 and a half hours. I nearly succumbed to hypothermia, but it was absolutely beautiful. I wasn't really expecting to see anything, but over the course of the time out there, we likely saw about 12ish fantastic meteors and several smaller ones. It was a really enlightening time too: never have I felt so at peace with the cosmos.

Also, I finally finished Man and his Symbols. I've been puzzling through that book for months, so its almost a relief to be able to read something else. I'm reading some poetry for the time being: I borrowed Howl from my friend Alex and bought the early works of Blake from the used book store. Howl is quite nice. Apparently, ever weed-smoking college hipster has adopted that poem as their own personal bible.

More art is on its way up. I only have periodic (infrequent) camera use, so I save stuff in my desk and then save it to my computer in bunches.

Also, for those of you who haven't noticed the monumentally verbose dialogues taking place on my board, I highly recommend you go visit the artwork of Melanie [link] She's a very nice lady, and has lots of lovely pictures. It will be worth your while.

I'm curious to see how the time shows on these posts.

I had my dinner. Then took a little unexpected nap. Now I feel really weird. It is 1:39AM here.

But my point, I left the computer just idling on your page. The comment to you on my screen reads that I posted it 4 seconds ago.

I know this has something to do with refreshing a page. Speaking of understanding systems. I had no experience on computers, at all, until a few months ago.

So, what I don't know if fairly astounding. I'm a tiny bit like Nell in that old Jodie Foster movie.

My little experiment, see how this comment registers.

No biggie, just caught itself up. I'm having an italian ice and go back to my journal to read, and now digest your words.

[I know, I replied to myself]

There must be a lawyer joke somewhere in this string of my own comments run together.

Wanted to tell you that is a ton of good stuff to unpack and I am going to.

With my crazy schedule, this is about dinner time for me.

I'll be back. I read what you said and was so grateful you took time to explain many good things.

I'm giving you this message here, because I'm not clear what happens if I send a short message and want to make another longer reply later.

Do you get notice of both comments? Even though you've been here 3 weeks, you may have already gained a better overview of the system than I have.

That was a GOOD answer(s).

:icontophatplz:...for a gentleman and a scholar.

I took it off to you.
